ELIGIBLE FAMILIES MUST PRE-REGISTER BY AUG. 5 FOR 13TH ANNUAL TARRANT COUNTY BACK TO SCHOOL ROUNDUP ON THURSDAY, AUG. 10, AT WILL ROGERS MEMORIAL CENTER

Free one-stop shop to provide school supplies for approximately 10,000 qualifying Tarrant County children, plus dental, health and vision screenings, immunizations, haircuts, information, services and more

FORT WORTH, Texas (July 6, 2017) – In its 13
th year, the Tarrant County Back To School Roundup, presented by Walmart, will take place Thursday, Aug. 10, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Will Rogers Memorial Center’s Amon G. Carter Exhibit Hall (3401 W. Lancaster Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76107). Families who meet eligibility guidelines must pre-register by Aug. 5 to attend the event. Registration events are being held throughout Tarrant County. (See schedule below for locations and times.)  For details, call 2-1-1 or visit backtoschoolroundup.org.

A one-stop shop to prepare the whole family for the first day of school, Roundup will provide free school supplies to pre-registered students in pre-K through 12th grade who meet specific eligibility requirements. Free services for students include immunizations, dental screenings, fluoride applications, toothbrushes, toothpaste, vision screenings and haircuts. All family members are welcome to take advantage of free health screenings (including blood pressure, glucose checks and kidney health screenings). Pre-K through 5th grade students will receive a free backpack. Plus, Half Price Books will give away 7,000 books. Other highlights will include musical entertainment, kids activities, games, interactive demonstrations and more.

“Through the Back to School Roundup we can get the ‘whole’ child ready from head to toe,” said Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley. “The more we care for our youth now, the less likely they'll face struggles in the future. We greatly appreciate the businesses, nonprofits and educational institutions rallying behind Roundup to ensure our children are equipped to achieve.”

Judge Whitley encouraged everyone to support the effort, whether through volunteering, sponsoring or donating money. A $50 donation will underwrite a free backpack, school supplies, immunizations and haircut for a child.

Funded entirely by private donations and in-kind contributions, Roundup is a collaborative effort between Tarrant County and its 20 school districts, its municipalities, public health department, state agencies, nonprofits, corporate sponsors and volunteers. For the last nine years, Walmart has been presenting sponsor of Roundup.

“Back to school is one of the most exciting times for us at Walmart," said Kellie Duhr, Walmart's Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations. "We are proud to sponsor the Back to School Roundup again this year, and help students and families in Tarrant County prepare for the school year."

Educational information, in English and Spanish, will be offered at community resource booths focused on literacy, parenting, nutrition, financial literacy, fire safety and social services. Representatives from Tarrant County schools will be on hand to answer questions and distribute materials on reading programs, psychological and social services, and family literacy.

Free parking is available at Farrington Field, located at the corner of University and Lancaster. Free shuttle service between Will Rogers and Farrington Field will be provided. Or parking is available for $10 at the Memorial Center.

IMPORTANT: Only eligible Tarrant County families who have pre-registered by Aug. 5 will be admitted into Roundup (no walk-ups the day of the event). In order to pre-register, participants must be public school students ages 4-18 who reside in Tarrant County and meet the 2017 Federal Poverty Income guidelines.
